The Desert Search K9 Dog Who Learned To Love Snow
Who Is K9 Gama?

If you’ve ever stood in the Sonoran Desert in the middle of summer, then you know how unforgiving that landscape can be. Temperatures pushing past 110 degrees, terrain that seems to stretch endlessly in every direction, and conditions that can turn dangerous faster than most people realize. It’s exactly the kind of place where having the right partner makes all the difference. Paws of Honor is proud to share the story of Borstar Unit of Tucson’s Sector Special Operations K9, Gama, who was that partner.
Gama was qualified in Search and Rescue, Tracking and Trailing, and Human Remains Detection. Now that may sound impressive on paper, but what it meant in reality was that she was assigned tasks no human searchers could do. She found people lost and clinging to survival in the desert heat. She tracked individuals trying to evade law enforcement through miles of remote wilderness. She detected narcotics being carried through isolated corridors and, in some of the hardest cases imaginable, she located deceased subjects in areas that would have otherwise remained unsearched.
Facing Hurricane Helene

For the families waiting on answers, her work meant everything. Gama’s reputation spread so far and wide that law enforcement agencies across the country would call on her too. Be it for missing persons cases, homicide investigations, or drowning victim recoveries, she proved to be the perfect detection K9 dog for many sensitive operations. The highlight of her career? K9 Gama aided in the search for missing residents in North Carolina and Tennessee during hurricane Helene, proving again, she is an indispensable part of any team.
Boots, Ball, and Snow Zoomies: Gama’s Retirement Routine

Now after years of early mornings, long days in the desert heat, and the kind of work that most wouldn’t even dare to do, K9 Gama has more than earned her retirement. These days, you’ll find her ruling the roost on what we lovingly call the mini ranch, where she has fully embraced her role as the boss dog. And trust us, she takes that title seriously. According to Gama, there is never enough time to play in the snow.
Retirement looks good on Gama. Her days are spent doing things she loves most with a daily session of fetch with her Chuckit being at the top of the list. You see the same drive and intensity in Gama from back in the day as soon as the ball goes flying. Some things truly never change and at Paws of Honor, we cherish such stories. And when the fetch session wraps up, she has absolutely no trouble shifting gears. She’s claimed her spot on the couch and the bed, and has made it very clear that both are non negotiable.
After Saving Lives, She Finally Gets to Just Be a Dog
Gama’s story is just one of many. There are many working and retired veteran K9s across the country who tirelessly serve their communities, handlers, and the people they were trained to protect. At Paws of Honor, our mission is to make sure these dogs are never forgotten, but more importantly, that they are supported in the ways they deserve. But we can’t do it without you.
There are many ways to get involved and become a part of what we’re building here. Whether you’re able to make a donation or share our stories with your friends and family, every little bit helps us. Your support will go a long way in providing routine and specialized veterinary care to ALL retired Military and Law Enforcement K9s enrolled in our Veterinary Care Program.
