K-9 Niko was purchased from Auburn University on March 18, 2013 and was trained to be a passive response Explosive detection dog. Niko is proficient in detecting 14 base odors, some of which include C4, smokeless powder double base, detonation cord RDX, ammonium nitrate, and TNT just to name a few. Once Niko detects an odor, he will sit to indicate to his handler that a scent is present. His reward is his favorite toy, a squeaky yellow Kong ball. Over the course of his career Niko has performed thousands of protective sweeps of high value target facilities, protective details on high profile dignitaries, special events and hundreds of demonstrations for public relations, education and awareness events. Niko has performed by referral or request for agencies such as, but not limited to, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of State, the Central Intelligence Agency, the United States Secret Service, the Department of Justice (United States Secret Service/Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives), multiple Sheriff’ and Police Departments, as well as local Fire Department K-9 Explosive Units and Bomb Squads. Niko trained weekly on all odors that he has been trained to detect and this on-going training averaged a minimum of 16 hours per month. Niko was assigned to the Grand Prairie Texas office but traveled extensively throughout the 5 State Region that composes Region 7.
