Protecting Diplomacy: K9 Tank at the State Department
Who is K9 Tank?

Before he became a master of couch snuggling and a special face at Paws of Honor, K9 Tank had a very different daily routine. For years, this steady, sharp-nosed Labrador Retriever reported for duty diligently with a calm demeanor that always earned respect from his colleagues. To most passersby, he looks like just another pooch going about his day. To those who worked alongside him, Tank was a trusted partner, focused, fearless, and unfailingly loyal.
From 2014 through 2018, K9 Tank proudly served as a single purpose Explosive Detection K9 with the United States Department of State. When he wasn’t sniffing out explosives, he was busy with community outreach, attending National Night Out events and helping bring together public service and the people it protects. Calm under pressure and always ready to catch bad guys, Tank carried himself with professionalism that defines the very best working dogs.
This hero K9’s service didn’t slow down after his time at the State Department. From 2018 until his retirement in mid-2019, he continued safeguarding more than a dozen federal installations throughout the D.C. area, including the Kennedy Center. This is where one unforgettable highlight saw him sweeping the red carpet for the Kennedy Center Honors.
Today, hero K9 dog Tank is officially retired, though he hasn’t quite gotten the memo. He still inspects packages and vehicles at home with the same dedication he always had, before clocking out to enjoy backyard playtime and well-earned snuggles with mom and dad. From Paws of Honor, this is the story of a one-of-a-kind hero whose legacy of service continues to this day.
Federal Duty & the Red Carpet Sweep in D.C.

During his time with the Department of State, Tank spent long, serious days filled with routine checks, unfamiliar environments, and the kind of vigilance that rarely makes headlines. His work took him to spaces few dogs will see (and even fewer people), including the careful search of a historic piece of the Berlin Wall destined for the National Museum of American Diplomacy.
Thanks to his handler, K9 Tank was trained to approach each assignment with steady focus, treating every sweep as if it mattered, because it did.
One of the most memorable chapters of Tank’s federal service unfolded at the Kennedy Center. While celebrities and dignitaries prepared for an evening of celebration, Tank was already hard at work, nose to the ground, performing a full explosive sweep of the red carpet ahead of the Kennedy Center Honors. It wasn’t glamorous from his point of view. It was a job to do, but the moment captured the unique intersection of national security and national culture. When all eyes were on the lights, the cameras, and the applause, Tank quietly made sure the stage was safe.
Still Working With Paws of Honor(His Way): Life After Retirement
Retirement hasn’t slowed down K9 Tank’s vigilant spirit. Once a dog develops the drive and discipline required for explosive detection work, those instincts become part of who they are. This retired K9 veteran continues to put his training to use at home, carefully inspecting every package that arrives at the door and thoroughly checking any vehicle that pulls into the driveway. His handler jokes that nothing gets past Tank’s watchful eye, even in retirement.
It’s a testament to the dedication these working dogs bring to their roles and a reminder that their service mentality doesn’t simply disappear when their official duties end. But retirement has also given Tank the chance to enjoy life’s simpler pleasures. His days are now filled with activities that would have been impossible during his working years. He spends hours romping through his backyard, chasing toys and exploring every corner of his domain with the same thoroughness he once applied to security sweeps.
When the day winds down, Tank has discovered his favorite off-duty assignment: snuggling on the couch with mom and dad. These quiet moments of companionship are his reward for years of dedicated service, and they highlight the loving bond between Tank and his handlers who have been by his side throughout his career.
Tank’s transition to retirement represents the happy ending that every working K9 deserves, but not all retired service dogs are as fortunate. This is why at Paws Of Honor, we work around-the-clock to ensure that retired military and veteran dogs receive the care, medical treatment, and support they need after their years of protecting our nation. These heroes gave their best years in service to our country, and they deserve our support in return.
Tank’s story is just one of many of the incredible stories we have from our veteran K9’s. We are constantly getting requests for new K9’s in our program and it is only with your support that we can continue to give these heroes the retirement they deserve. Please consider making a donation to Paws Of Honor to help other retired K9 veterans enjoy the comfortable, loving retirement they’ve earned.
