K9 Hugo was born on May 20, 2015 and was destined for greatness. He found his way to Lackland AFB San Antonio, being purchased by the Department of Homeland Security, and began his training as an Explosive Detection Canine. After successfully completing his training in 2017, he was assigned to his new partner, Houston Police Officer M. Slade. Officer Slade and Hugo bonded instantly, a bond that would only grew stronger by the day. Upon arriving in Houston, K9 Hugo went to work immediately, providing security for all of Houston’s major airports. During his career, Hugo played a major role in security efforts across the Houston area, providing support to the protection of political leaders, including five former US Presidents, to post season Major League Baseball games, Oil & Gas infrastructure, foreign dignitaries, NCAA Final Four, and countless bomb threats across the Texas region. K9 Hugo’s demeanor also allowed him to participate in many public relation events ranging from elementary schools to retirement communities. Hugo retired from service on January 18, 2024 at the age 8 years old. Officer Slade adopted him as most handlers do, and Hugo officially became part of the family. Being a large German Shepherd, in addition to a working dog, his service took a toll on his body, but not his character. Hugo has undergone treatment for back and stomach issues, but doesn’t let that slow him down. Hugo now enjoys his retirement, playing with his Kong and being lazy around the house. Officer Slade still takes Hugo to work every now and then along with his new K9 partner, to allow Hugo to socialize with past and new canine companions.
