Kato

Kato was a Patrol and Explosives Detector Dog (PEDD) who entered military service on October 16, 2017, and spent much of his career working in the Washington, D.C., area. Kato completed one deployment to Djibouti, Africa, and supported multiple U.S. Secret Service missions, as well as many missions for other federal agencies throughout the National Capital Region. Kato retired from military service on March 22, 2024, and has fully embraced his new life as a retired working dog. These days, he is a much more relaxed and silly guy who loves playing fetch, napping, going for walks, and hiking. His favorite toys are Kongs and balls, and he especially enjoys carrying his Kong around with him for most of the day. He does not discriminate when it comes to treats and will happily accept just about any kind, although he has a particular love for his beef cheek chews. Kato took his job very seriously for years, so it has been heartwarming to watch him discover a new, less serious side of his personality and just how enjoyable retirement can be. After years of military service, Kato is happiest with the simple things: a Kong, a good walk, and a nap. He loves spending time with his family and enjoying all the little things that retirement has to offer. While his working years required focus and discipline, retirement has given him the opportunity to simply enjoy being a dog, and we are grateful to be able to give him that.
