Christy
- Breed / Mix: Labrador Retriever
- Age: 11 Years
- Service: Federal Agency
- Sponsor: Hurricane’s Heroes
Christy started out in the Puppies Behind Bars program in upstate NY which trains prison inmates to raise service dogs for veterans and first responders, as well as explosives detection canines for law enforcement. She was slated to be a PTSD dog but her whining and barking changed her career path to that of explosives detection (luckily she did not whine while searching for bombs). Because of this, she was older than most dogs when they start out, but she proved herself to be a consistent and faithful partner throughout her 5 year career. Christy’s primary job was vehicle and package searches as well as protective sweeps in support of Force Protection at a secure DoD facility in Virginia. She also assisted other federal and local agencies in the Washington, DC area with several large scale explosive detection missions such as many Marine Corp Marathons, special events, active bomb threats, and evidence recovery when an unknown subject fired a firearm from a vehicle in front of her own house. Christy is a quirky, small girl who likes to growl when you give her butt rubs (it’s a friendly growl, I swear!), barks at dead people (well, there’s no one we can see) and is a sweetheart who wants to give kisses if you’ll put your face low enough for her to reach. She shares her home with her former handler (Mom), her Dad and her crazy 14lb big sister who she loves very much, even though she’s bossy. Christy enjoys laying in the sun on the deck, trips to see family on Long Island (especially going to the beach), playing fetch with her frisbee and snuggling on the couch. My wish is that I give her the happiest and most fulfilled retirement I can to honor all of her hard work and dedication in helping to protect this great nation.
