K9 Joan was born in Florida on 3/29/2014. From there, she was relocated to New York and enrolled in The Puppies Behind Bars Service Dog Program. K9 Joan was then transferred to the ATF to be trained for Explosive Detection. In 2016, she graduated and became a Police Explosive Detection K9 for the Federal Government. After working hard and keeping the public/Government safe for 5 years, she suddenly became very ill and almost succumbed to effects of Addison’s Disease. Veterinarian professionals were able to reverse the direction of the disease after 7 days in the ICU. K9 Joan was medically retired, and is being treated with daily medications and monthly injections to keep her body functioning properly. K9 Joan is now healthy and happy at home, where she is playing and “being a dog” with her handler & loving family.
