Canine Rom is a Pennsylvania State Police Explosive Detection Canine who proudly served alongside his handler in the Bureau of Emergency and Special Operations. Throughout his career, Rom conducted hundreds of proactive explosive detection sweeps at schools, mass transit systems, sporting events, critical infrastructure, and public gatherings across Pennsylvania. Rom also provided security for numerous high-profile events involving the President of the United States, Vice President, Governor of Pennsylvania, and other dignitaries. He responded to countless bomb threats and assisted in criminal investigations by locating firearms, shell casings, and other critical evidence. In addition to explosive detection, Rom was trained in human tracking and participated in searches for missing persons and suspects, including supporting the historic Danilo Cavalcante manhunt. During his career, Rom traveled throughout Pennsylvania and worked with numerous local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to help protect communities and keep the public safe. When he wasn’t working, Rom loved spending time with his family, relaxing at home, and simply being a dog. Whether it was playing, going for walks, or enjoying a well-earned nap after a long day, he embraced every moment of downtime. Like most working dogs, he never turned down a good treat and was always ready for his next adventure. Rom’s dedication, loyalty, and unwavering work ethic made him an exceptional partner and a trusted protector. His service touched countless lives, and his legacy extends far beyond the searches he conducted. He retired after an outstanding career defined by courage, professionalism, and an unbreakable bond with his handler.
